Matt’s
first exhibition was a continuation from his degree show. Entitled ‘shop
til u drop’ the work looked at some consumer issues. It was the first
time that Matt had decided to incorporate shopping receipts and other found
objects into his work. The exhibition was successful as the paintings and drawings
were admired as good works of art, but also sent out messages about us and our
environments. Receipts were used as a reminder, almost like a diary of our commuting
and shopping trips, what time we bought a paper, caught a bus or train, filled
up with petrol, or fought our way through the crowds for that bargain. In general
we rush around in circles, earning money and then do the same when spending
that money.
